Of Keysville
Dies Thursday
KEYSVILLE, May 3 - Ethel M. Newcomb Dunnavant,
78, of Keysville, died Thursday, April 28,2005.
She was born December 17, 1926, the daughter of
the late Frank and Minnie Meadows. She was the widow of Howard G. Dunnavant.
Mrs. Dunnavant was a retired employee of E. R.
Carpenter, Richmond, and worked for over 20 years at Craddock-Terry Shoe
Corporation in Farmvllle.
She is survived by three children, Ann Seagle and
husband, Jerald of Keysville, C. E. "Bobby" Newcomb and wife, Donna of Meherrin
and Betty Hinkley and husband, Phillip of Richmond; two sisters, Minnie Dixon
and Eunice Stinnett both of Keysville; eight grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at
Keysville Baptist Temple with interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Charlotte Court
House.
Memorial contributions may be made to Keysville
Baptist Temple or Charlotte County Rescue Squad.

DILLWYN, May 3 - Myrtle B. Allen, 78, of Dillwyn,
died Friday, April 29, 2005 in Farmvllle.
She was born September 23, 1926 in Cumberland
County. She was the widow of Jack Webb Allen.
She is survived by her son, Charles E. Allen and
his wife, Ann of Dillwyn; her sisters, Betty Jo Tillett of Cumberland and Sadie
Baker of Chesterfield; her grandchildren, Charity Allen Manis, Rene' Allen
Carwile and Charles E. Allen, Jr.; her great-grandchildren, JaVannah Taylor,
Allen Taylor, Cydni Carwile, Devin Allen and Jackson Allen.
A funeral service was held Monday at 2 p.m. at
Concord Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Concord
Baptist Church or to Dillwyn Rescue Squad.

Dies in Texas
DE KALB, TX, May 3 - First Sergeant Lewis
Beauford Banton, (Ret.), 80, of De Kalb, Texas, formerly of Buckingham County,
died Thursday, April 28,2005.
He was born in Buckingham County, a son of the
late Eugene K. Banton, Sr. and Bertha Farrar Banton.
He is survived by one son, Michael Simpson of
Texas; a sister, Louise Banton Peake of Richmond; two brothers, Thomas L. Banton
of Powhatan and Jimmy Bruce Banton of Charlottesville; two granddaughters, Leta
Ann Johnson and Jeannie Jacobs; one grandson, Michael Lewis Simpson and four
great-grandchildren all of De Kalb, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife,
Leta Mac Banton, a sister. Grace Banton King and five brothers, Eugene Kenneth
Banton, Otis Gus Banton, Edgar F. Banton, Lindbergh P. Banton and Eugene K.
Banton, Jr.
Mr. Banton retired honorably from the U.S. Army
after 23 years of service. He served in World War II during the Third Wave of
Normandy and two tours in Korea. He was awarded two Bronze Stars of Valor. He
also retired from civil service at Red River Arsenal Army Depot, Texarkana, TX
and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of De Kalb.
Interment was held in College Hill Cemetery, De
Kalb.

Joseph Wilson Ramsey, 77
Of Farmville
Died Thursday
MAY 3 - Joseph Wilson Ramsey, 77, of Farmville,
died Thursday, April 28, 2005.
He was born June 12, 1927, in Charlotte County, a
son of the late Coley C. and Addle Garrison Ramsey.
Mr. Ramsey was a lifetime and founding member of
the Prince Edward County Rescue Squad, where he served in many capacities for
numerous years, even at the state level. He was former co-owner of Longwood Well
Drilling.
Mr. Ramsey graduated from Randolph-Henry High
School and Phillips Business College in Lynchburg, and served his country in the
U.S. Navy from 1945-1947. He was a member of the Farmville Presbyterian Church
where he was an elder, and a member of the Farmville Moose Lodge and VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Ramsey; a son,
Doug Ramsey and special friend Ruth Ann; two daughters, Debbie Mounce and
husband, Doug, and Kathy Motley and husband, Terry; grandchildren, Dustin Coley
Ramsey, Amy Motley Harris and husband Britt, Tina Motley, Anne Hampton Hall and
husband Randy, and Dabney Smith and husband Steven;three great-grandchildren,
Jordyn Nicole and Tyier Britton Harris and Jacob Wilson Hall;and son-in-law,
Hampton Brown. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Campbell C. and James
M. Ramsey, and daughter Judith R. Brown.
A funeral service was held Saturday at Farmville
Presbyterian Church with interment in Westview Cemetery.

CUMBERLAND, May 3 - Ms. Carol Jean Laird (Cissy),
46, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, in Cumberland.
She is survived by her mother, Alice Smith
Booker; a son, Gerald Laird, Jr.; three daughters, Sheryl Pendleton, Sherill
Pendleton, and Latiara Laird; six grandchildren, Jason, Enam, Tyrell, Asante,
Darius and Dontae; eight brothers, a twin brother Harold. Earl, James, Larry,
Luther, Gregory, Mark and Gary Booker; two aunts, Mary Home and Evelyn Hargrove;
two uncles, Raymond Smith and Herbert Smith; two sisters-in-law. Angle Booker
and Sharry Booker, and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday at Mt. Calvary
Baptist Church, Cartersville, with the Rev. Robert White, pastor, officiating,
and minister Lewis Kelly, Eulogist. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Buried Sunday
MEHERRIN, April 28 - A funeral service for Gideon
Walton, Sr., 75, was held Sunday, April 24, at 2:30 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist
Church, with internment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Haney Thomas, Jr.,
pastor, officiated. Mr. Walton died Thursday, April 21, 2005.
He was born February 28, 1930, the eldest son of
10 children born to the late Mable Walton Hester. His siblings include:Walter,
Willie and Sue (all of whom preceded him in death);Yancey, Frances Smith,
Perliza Davis, Laura Watson, Hugo and Marcella Hester.
Mr. Walton and his wife, Pearl, were married May
24, 1952, and they had 10 children, Reginald, Geraldine, Gideon Jr., Connie
(deceased), Willis, Rosemary, Tammy, Mable, Terrence and David. Gideon and Pearl
also raised as their own, grandchildren Veronica Agnew and Quinton Walton.
He is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 20
great-grandchildren, and one aunt, Sarah Lou Threat.

Of Sarasota, FL
Died April 15
SARASOTA, FL, April 28 - Robert P. Ream, 90,
father of Carolyn Banton of Farmville, died Friday, April 15, 2005, in Sarasota,
FL.
Mr. Ream was born Sept. 10, 1914, in Evantson,
IL, and came to Sarasota in 1980. He retired as an electrical engineer at
Illinois Bell Telephone Co. and participated in the design of the North American
Distant Early Warning Radar System.
In addition to his daughter, Carolyn Banton of
Farmville, he is survived by another daughter, Peggy Edwards of St. Petersburg,
FL; a son, Joe of Urbana, IL; a sister, Dorothy Packard of Wilmette, IL; four
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

PAMPLIN, April 28 - Ruby Ferguson Covington, 93,
of Rt. 1, Pamplln, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005 in Appomattox Health Care
Center. She was the wife of the late Henry Judson Covington.
Born in Appomattox County, May 15, 1911, she was
a daughter of the late Winston and Lillie Morris Ferguson.
Mrs. Covington was a longtime member of Elon
Baptist Church and a member of the Woman's Missionary Union, the Extension
Homemakers, and the Farm Bureau.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law,
Henry Earl and Jean Covington of Appomattox;a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia
C. and John Dickens of Harrisonburg; five grandchildren, Cindy Burnette,
Christina Covington, Brittany Covington, Elizabeth Dickens, Caroline Dickens and
a great-granddaughter, Renny Burnette.
She was preceded in death by a son, E. M. "Eddie"
Covington;three sisters, Fannie Schampel, Rachel Childers, Madeline Inge;and two
brothers, David Ferguson and Nathaniel Ferguson.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Friday,
at Elon Baptist Church by the Rev. Andrew Matthews. Burial will follow in the
Swan Family Cemetery, Pamplin.

Dies April 15
APRIL 26 - Connie M. Rawlins, 90, of Farmvllle,
died Friday, April 15, 2005 at Southside Community Hospital and was funeralized
on April 21 from the Beulah A.M.E. Church in Farmvllle. She was the widow of Dr.
Albert G. Rawlins, Sr.
Mrs. Rawlins was the daughter of the late Joseph
and Pearl Madden of Farmvllle. A graduate of Virginia State University, Class of
1935, she was a public school teacher for over 43 years, having taught In
Cumberland County, Charlottesville and Prince Edward County. She was also a
"Golden Soror" of Alpha Kappa Alpha, having pledged in 1934, and was one of the
Charter Members of the Kappa Rho Omega Chapter of AKA in Farmvllle. She was a
member of the Martha E. Forrester Council of Women for over 80 years, having
started in the Junior Auxiliary.
Mrs. Rawlins was a pianist for several churches,
Beulah AME (since she was 13), Mercy Seat and Cornerstone. She also taught piano
lessons.
She is survived by three daughters, Sylvia Rawlins of
Merrillville, IN, Ivy Rawlins of Lanham, MD and Shirley Rawlins of Brooklyn, NY;
one son, Albert G. Rawlins, Jr. of Hartford, CT; a grandson, Jeffrey Reid of
Dimona, Israel; one sister, Ophelia Venable of Norfolk; a devoted caregiver,
Aril Phipps; nieces, cousins, other relatives and devoted friends.

KEYSVILLE, April 21 - Mattie Faye Jones, 71, of
Keysvllle, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005.
Mrs. Jones was an employee of Burkeville Veneer
Plant for over 20 years.
She is survived by one daughter, Judy Witt and
her husband. Butch of Farmville;two grandsons, Steve Martin and his wife,
Felicia of Pamplln and David Witt of Farmville;
three great-grandchildren, Craig, Natalya and Natasha; a very special niece,
Vickie Ferguson, as well as a host of other nieces, nephews and church family.
She was preceded in death by a son, Herman David Jones.

Cemetery, Green Bay.

Gregory, 69, of Buckingham, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at the University of
Virginia Medical Center.
Born June 27, 1935 in Buckingham County, he was
the son of the late Rolfe Gregory and Bessie Ragland Gregory.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Bryant Gregory;
two daughters, Jackie and husband, Wayne Gentry of Buckingham and Theresa and
husband, Shane Gimbert of Charlottesville; a son, Melvin J. Gregory, Jr. of
Buckingham; a brother, Vernon Gregory of Scottsville;eight grandchildren,

Jimmy Yarbrough, 48
Member Of Longwood
Admissions Staff, Dies
APRIL 19 - James M. "Jimmy" Yarbrough, 48, died
Thursday, April 14, 2005.
Mr. Yarbrough, a Longwood alumnus who had battled
non-Hodgkins lymphoma for eight years, was senior associate director of
admissions. He had worked in the admissions office since August 1989. He was
also pastor of St. Luke's Baptist Church in Brookneal.
A Richmond native, he transferred to Longwood in
the Spring of 1977. A guard on the Longwood basketball team for two years, he
set a school record that still stands when he scored 46 points against Bluefield
College in the final game of the 1977-78 season.
It was at Longwood, as an undergraduate, that he
met his wife of 26 years, Allie Chaffin Yarbrough, who is co-principal of Prince
Edward County High School. They have three children, Neal, Jason and Anne.
A funeral service was held Monday at Mount Olive
Baptist Church in Victoria, followed by interment in the church cemetery.

She Is survived by her son, William W. "Bill"
Crawley and his wife, Jane of Farmville; two grandchildren, Teresa C. O'Neill
and her husband, David of Mechanicsville and William W. Tony" Crawley of
Farmville; one great-granddaughter, Julia Elyse O'Neill of Mechanicsville and
one sister, Ruthann W. Duvall of Topping.

CONCORD, April 19 - Delia Doss Grubbs, 82, died
Sunday, April 17, 2005 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the
late Alfred Lewis Grubbs, Sr.
Born in Appomattox County, June 2, 1922, she was
the daughter of the late John A. and Minnie Pearl Stanley Doss.
Mrs. Grubbs was a member of Calvary Baptist
Church and a retired seamstress for Appomattox Garment Company.
She is survived by three sons, Alfred Lewis "Al"
Grubbs, Jr. of Appomattox, Larry Arnold Grubbs and his wife, Esther and Gary
Carroll Grubbs and his wife, B. J. all of Concord; one daughter, Delia G.
Williams and her husband, Robert D. of Gretna; eight grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren; a devoted niece, Helen Phelps and numerous other nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Williams; two
brothers, Alfred Doss and William Doss; two grandchildren and one
daughter-in-law, Sandra J. Grubbs.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday in
Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Frank Casper, with burial following in
Concord Cemetery.

Sr., 79, of Dlllwyn, died Saturday, April 16,2005.
He was born June 23, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA,
the son of the late James W. Wasson, Sr. and Florence A. Wasson.
Mr. Wasson was in the 4th Infantry Division
during World War II receiving two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.
He is survived by his wife, Blanche Wasson; his
children, Albert L. Wasson, Jr. of New Jersey, Linda L. Kirk of Dillwyn and
Robert W. Wasson of New Jersey; a brother, Wallace B. Wasson of Dlllwyn; seven
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dlllwyn, with interment in Holly Memorial Gardens,
Charlottesvllle, at 2 p.m.

Clyde 0. Adams, 81
Cumberland Native
Dies in Mississippi
BILOXI, MS, April 19 - Clyde Ottway Adams, 81, of
Biloxi, Mississippi, died Thursday, April 14, 2005 in Biloxi. He was born
November 19, 1923 in Cumberland, to Frank and Jesse Walton Adams.
Mr. Adams served in the US Army during WWII, in
the Pacific, in the Bushmasters Infantry Battalion, where he was awarded the
Bronze Star for meritorious achievement along the coast of New Guinea during the
period of January through September 1944. In 1945, he was assigned to the US Air
Force and retrained as an aircraft mechanic. After 21 years of service to his
country, he retired from military life.
In 1962, he began a new career as a Pringle Ford
car salesman, where he was awarded Salesman of the Month many times and he was a
member of the 500 Club. In 1976, Mr. Adams Joined the sales force at Dees
Chevrolet Company in Biloxi. In 1984, he retired to working in his shed on
lawn-mowers and doing some fishing. His life revolved around his family and he
is greatly missed, but he left some wonderful memories.
He was preceded in death by his parents: his
brothers, Walton, John Samuel, and Thomas Adams; and his sister, Martha Keller.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Louise Griffin
Adams;his two daughters, Frances Good of Mandeville, LA and Peggy Adams of
Brooklyn, NY;his two brothers, William Harvey Adams of Raleigh, NC and George
"Buster" Adams of Cumberland; his sister, Joyce Adams Beasley of Raleigh, NC;
his four grandchildren, Kelly Briscoe Mallette of Hattiesburg, MS, William
"Bill" Briscoe of Biloxi, O'Neil Adams of Biloxi, and Richard Moreta of
Brooklyn, NY;and five great-grandchildren.
The service was on Monday, April 18, at 9:15 a.m.
in the Riemann Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, with full military honors,
followed at 10 a.m. at the Biloxi National Cemetery.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday at the
Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery.

Baptist Church of Dillwyn.

Resident, Dies
APRIL 19 - Elizabeth DeJarnette Elder, 88, of
Farmville, formerly of Lynchburg, died Friday, April 15, 2005 at Southside
Community Hospital. She was the wife of Bennie Franklin Elder.
Mrs. Elder was born in Campbell County, April 9,
1917, a daughter of the late Evan Edward DeJarnette and Dora Sowell DeJarnette.
She was a member of Fairview Christian Church and a retired employee of General
Electric.
She is survived by one son, Franklin Wayne Elder
and wife, Ellen of Americus, GA; one daughter, Linda E. Grounard and husband,
Daniel of Farmville; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Wayne Elder, Lori Elizabeth
Elder, Adam Barrett DeMuth and Ashley Blair DeMuth;three sisters, Marion Nash of
Appomattox, Inez Wood of Charlotte, NC and Ernestine Hannah of Lynchburg.
A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Sunday in
Henderson Funeral Home Chapel, Brookneal, by the Rev. Bruce Johnson, with
interment in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.
