      MARCH 8 - Claude Swanson "Boonie" Shumaker, 74, formerly of Farmville, died Thursday, March 3, 2005 in Bedford.
      He was the son of the late George Malcomb "Ruben" Shumaker and Minnie Ragland Shumaker. He grew up in Red House and moved to Farmville in the late 1960's. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church, Red House.
      He is survived by his wife, Jane Hanger Shumaker of Farmvllle; two sisters. Teen Shumaker Eagle of Farmvllle and Gladys E. Branch of Laurell, MD; four sisters-in-law, Daisy Shumaker of Brookneal, Alice Shumaker, Betty Shumaker and Deborah Hanger Helmick all of Farmville; a host of nieces and nephews and a special friend and caregiver, Susan Spencer of Lynchburg. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Luther, Emmett, George and Arthur Shumaker and three sisters, Isabelle Shumaker Stinson, Ruby Shumaker McKay and Dorothy Shumaker Wood.
      A graveside service was held 11 a.m. Saturday in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

Mary Noel Dunkum, 90
Of Chesterfield
Dies Sunday


      CHESTERFIELD, March 8 - Mary Noel Dunkum, 90, of Chesterfield, died Sunday, March 6, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Dunkum.
      She is survived by a son, G. Ronnie Dunkum and his wife, Gwen; a sister, Rebecca Bowles of Nebraska; grandchildren, Kimberly Michelle Dunkum and Krystal Gayle Dunkum and a sister-in-law. Ruby Falls of Farmville.
      Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bliley Funeral Homes' Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, Richmond. Interment will follow in Dale Memorial Park.
      The family will receive friends this evening (Tuesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

      RICHMOND, March 8 - Joseph P. Repas, of Richmond, died Monday, March 7, 2005. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice G. Repas.
      Mr. Repas was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 395 and the Virginia Society of CPAs.
     He is survived by a sister-in-law, Jean Repas of Connecticut; a niece, Jeanne McCarthy; a nephew, Jackie Repas and numerous other family and devoted friends and neighbors.
      Funeral services will be held 12 noon Wednesday at Bliley Funeral Homes' Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, Richmond. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in Spring Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Darlington Heights.

      MARCH 8 - Mary Lou Watson, 63, of Farmvllle, died Saturday, March 5, 2005.
      Mrs. Watson was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church and the church choir.
      She is survived by her husband, Frank M. Watson; her children, Cynthia Watson Ott, Tracy Watson Bohorquez both of Farmvllle and Franklin Dean Watson of Williamsburg; three grandchildren, Jeffery Dylan Ott, Elizabeth Lee Watson and Alexis Michelle Watson; three sisters, Eunice Toney, Christine Houston of Richmond and Doris McClish of Ohio; three brothers, Les McCormick of Richmond, Ernest McCormick of Burkeville and John McCormick of Crewe.

      MARCH 8 - Kathryn Dunnington Sydnor, 87, died Thursday, March 3, 2005 In Farmvllle.
      She was the daughter of the late Mr. And Mrs. J. William Dunnington and the widow of J. Will Sydnor.
      Mrs. Sydnor graduated from Farmville High School and attended Smith College in Washington, DC, where she studied interior design. She was an avid golfer and a collector of southern antiques.
      She is survived by two sons. William Dunnington Sydnor and his wife, Linda of Richmond and William Jennings Sydnor, II of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Kathryn Sheffield Sydnor of Richmond and Nathaniel Terry Sydnor of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a sister, Sally Ann Dunnington Whidden of Farmville; three nieces. Dolly Whidden Homer of Lynchburg, Kirby Whidden McElroy of Charlotte, NC and Kathryn Sprye Goebel of China Grove, NC; two nephews, Francis Leigh Orgain of Chesapeake and Walter Clement Sprye of Rocky Mt., NC. She was preceded in death by a son, James Dudley Sydnor and two sisters, Dolly Dunnington Orgain and India Dunnington Sprye.
      Graveside services were held 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Westvlew Cemetery, Farmville.

      NEW CANTON, March 2 - Pauline Garrett Newton, 92, of New Canton, passed away Thursday, February. 24, 2005, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
     She was born February 16, 1913, in Buckingham County.
      She is survived by her husband, Revery Earl Newton;
one sister, Virginia White of Richmond; one brother, Floyd Garrett of Dillwyn; seven children, Juanlta Hill and her husband, Robert, of New Canton, Charles Newton of New Canton, Christine Dunivan and her husband, Howard, of Columbia, Peggy Gough and her husband, Larry, of Dillwyn, Barbara Smith and her husband. Jimmy, of New Canton, Dennis Newton and his wife, Karin, of New Canton, Margie Childress and her husband, Abner, of Powhatan; a daughter at heart, Joan Elaine Robertson of Scottsvllle; eight grandchildren; a devoted grandson, Charles (Charlie-Boo) Newton; 10 great-grandchildren;and five step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Earl Newton; two sisters and four brothers.
      A private graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, at Rocky Mount Methodist Church.

Dies Tuesday


      LYNCHBURG, March 3 - Rose Mueller Alley, 88, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005. She was the wife of the late Colonel Stuart Myron Alley.
      Mrs. Alley was born November 12, 1916, In Pittsburgh, PA, a daughter of the late Henry Mueller and Rosa Eichenberger Mueller. She taught German and English as a Second Language in several public school systems and participated in many volunteer organizations.
      She is survived by her children, Barbara Sue Wilber of Warrenton, Patricia Rose Townsend of Farmvllle and Robert Henry Alley of California; five grandchildren, Michael Preston Wilber, Jessica Lynn Wilber, Elizabeth Patricia Townsend. Neal Stuart Townsend and Meredith Rose Townsend; and a sister, Bertha Heatley of California.
      A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, March 5 at 11 a.m. at College Presbyterian Church, Hampden-Sydney.

Doris H. Gates, 92

Dies Tuesday


      RICE, March 1 - Doris Hughes Gates, 92, of Rice, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005.
      She was born September 13, 1912 in Prince Edward County, the daughter of the late Samuel Morton Hughes and Maye Wilson Hughes.
      Mrs. Gates was a lifelong member of Pisgah Baptist Church of Rice, a devoted pianist and children's choir director of Sharon Baptist Church for most of her life. She was one of the founding members of the Rice Bridge Club. She was a member of the Longwood Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution of which she was Regent from 1974-1977, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Farmville Woman's Club.
      She is survived by her son, William Hughes Gates and wife, Nancy of Rice; a daughter, Carolyn Gates Martin and husband, Sam of Rice; seven grandchildren, Anne Gates Muccio and husband, Jim of Loveland, Ohio, Susan Gates Murphy and husband, Jim of Dover, New Hampshire, Elizabeth Martin Lydon and husband, Greg of Arlington, Samuel Anthony Martin, III and wife, Amy of Virginia Beach, John Hughes Martin of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, William Henry Martin of Rice and John Aumon Gates, III and wife, Vicky of Midlothian; eight great-grandchildren, Rachel, Sean and Connor Muccio, Seamus and Megan Murphy, Kate Lydon and Zane Brandt Gates and a daughter-in-law, Jo Elam Gates of Midlothian. She was preceded in death by a son, John Aumon Gates, Jr.
      Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Pisgah Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

      MARCH 1 - Louise Crute Herschler, 93, of Farmville, died Friday, February 25, 2005.
      She was born in Farmville and received a nursing degree from the University of Virginia and did post graduate work at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After service for several years as an operating nurse at the Alexandria Hospital, she accepted a position as head nurse at the Plantation Hospital at Waipahu, Hawaii.
      Some years later Mrs. Herschler accepted a position as head of the Red Cross Services in Hawaii. She taught nursing classes and provided on-sight nursing services for volcanic eruptions and tidal waves. She was active in Woman's Clubs and Garden Clubs in Hawaii and Culpeper.
      She is survived by her husband, Louis H. Herschler; two sisters, Helen Ross of Richmond and Virginia Deck of Orange, California; ten nieces and nephews and their children. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Crute and David Crute.
      Graveside services were held 10 a.m. Sunday in Westvlew Cemetery, Farmville. The Reverend Michael Browder officiated.

Dies Wednesday


      MARCH 1 - Walter Don Casebolt, 51, of Farmville, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005 in Farmville.
      He was born March 18, 1953 in St. Augustine, Texas, a son of Betty Brown Casebolt and the late John Casebolt.
      Mr. Casebolt was a retired Marine Officer. During his 20 years serving his country, he earned many awards and medals including the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
      In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Krista Casebolt; a daughter, Nicole Casebolt of Fredericksburg; a son, Zachary Casebolt of Tennessee; sisters, Mary Jo Casebolt of Spotsylvania, Penny Casebolt of Charlottesvllle and Nona Lawson of Tennessee.
      A private memorial service was held at the family residence Thursday evening.

      Mr. Bryant was a retired farmer.
      He is survived by four brothers, Ray and Claud Bryant, Perry and Billy Terpin and a sister, Bessie Rife.

      PAMPLIN, March 1 - Robert Rufus McGhee, Sr., 92, of Pamplin, died Monday, February 28, 2005 at Appomattox Health Care Center.
      Born in Bluestone, West Virginia, he was a son of the late John Kelly McGhee and Mattie May Bradley McGhee.
      He is survived by his wife, Clemmie M. McGhee; two sons, John Marvin McGhee of Fries and Robert Rufus McGhee, Jr. of Norfolk; a daughter. Sally Mae McGhee of Norfolk; stepsons, Luther Glenn and Robert Glenn both of Pamplin, Twyman Glenn of Lynchburg; stepdaughters, Janice Dowdy of Pamplin, Rose Crabtree of Utica, KY and Betty Reamer of Keysvllle; two sisters, Mamie M. Padgette and Ann Kelly M. Augustina both of Florida and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
      A funeral service will be held 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Mark Niederbrock. Interment service will follow at 2 p.m. In Wood-lawn Memorial Gardens, Virginia Beach.
