Thursday, December 4, 2003 in
Richmond.
He was born January 14, 1930 in
Blount County, Tennessee, a son of the late
Luther Lee and Martha Isophlne
Whaley.
Mr. Whaley was a retired
employee of Elllngton
Oil
Company. He was an elder at Cumberland Presbyterian
Church as well as a choir
member and served as superintendent
of Sunday School. He was a member of the Gideon's
and the Parkinson's
Support Group. The children and even adults knew him
as "The Candy Man", he loved to give
to others; candy was one of the ways he made you smile.
He Is survived
by his wife,

Whaley; his daughters, Debbie
Crenshaw
and her husband, Ron of Chesterfield
and Janice
W. Huddleston
and her husband, Lawrence of Farmvllle; his
sister,
Lavern
Ownby and

Huddleston. He was preceded
in death by a sister
and four brothers.

Dies Monday
DECEMBER 11 - Ruth Reynolds Stimpson, 92, of Farmville, died Monday,
December 8, 2003.
Born October 28, 1911 near Gretna, she was the daughter of the late
Samuel and Roxie Reynolds. She was the widow of Thomas E. Stimpson.
Mrs. Stimpson was a 1932 graduate of Longwood Teachers College and
retired in 1978 from the Cumberland County Public School system.
She is survived by a son, Thomas Edward Stimpson, Jr. and his wife,
Connie of Cumberland; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Ruth Anderson.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Browns Presbyterian
Church with Interment in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Browns Presbyterian Church Building
Fund.

DECEMBER 11 - Tony Glen Lewis, 41, of Chesterfield County, died Sunday,
December 7, 2003.
He was born October 23, 1962 in North Carolina, a son of Can-oil
Lewis and Margaret Mae Marlin Corum.
In addition to his parents, he Is survived by four children, Rebel
19, Justin 14, Kelsey 14 and Stevie 4; stepfather, Donald Corum; stepmother,
Thelma Lewis; four sisters, Tammy Harvatin, Wanda Mayer, Donna Jean Lowder
and Mary Lou Stubbs; three brothers, Roy Corum, Dale Meredith and Mike Rose;
his grandmother, Verona Lewis and many dear friends.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of
Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, with Interment In Trinity Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7 to 9
p.m. at the funeral home.

KEYSVILLE, Dec. 9 - A funeral service for William Cleveland "Bill" Ward,
Jr., 87, was held Friday at 11 a.m. at Ash Camp Baptist Church, with
Interment in Ash Camp Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Ward died Wednesday, December
3, 2003.
One of the outstanding citizens in Southside Virginia, Mr. Ward
became president of the State Bank of Keysville in 1960 and served as
president until 1983, when the bank merged with United Virginia Bank and he
served as chairman of the newly merged bank.
Among his many outstanding contributions to this area of Virginia
was his leadership role In establishing the Southside Community College
branch in Keysville on the John H. Daniel Campus.
He was a former chairman of the Democratic Party in Charlotte
County and served in the Southside Region Committee to improve and enhance
Economic Development.
The Town of Keysville honored him the community service J. T. Thompson
Award.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia P. Ward; one daughter, Debra
W. Hunter of Appomattox; two sisters. Marguerite W. Radford of Keysville and
Elizabeth W. Crowder of Clarksville and two grandchildren

Dies in Florida
COCOA, Florida, Dec. 9 - Wilbur Roosevelt Vanderpool, Sr., 64, of Cocoa, FL,
died Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at his home.
He was born in Farmvllle and moved to Brevard County In 1957. He
worked at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station for 45 years. He loved hunting,
air-boats and mechanics.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Vanderpool; his children, Cheri (Frank)
Scharfenstlne of Scottsmoor, FL, Wilbur "Sonny" (Salina) Vanderpool and Roy
(Andrea) Vanderpool both of Cocoa, FL; four grandchildren; his mother, Zeena
Vanderpool of Farmvllle; a sister, Betty Jane Fox of Buckingham; a brother,
Pete Vanderpool and Linda Flemming of Cocoa, FL and eight step grand
children.
Services were held Sunday December 7 at Brevard Memorial Funeral
Home Chapel.
A memorial service will be held in Farmvllle at a later date.

RICE, Dec. 9 - Nannie Mac Watson Sprague, 77, of Rice, died Sunday, November
23, 2003.
She was born April 22, 1926, a daughter of the late Henry and Addie
Rice Watson. She was he widow of Melvin Sprague, Sr.
Mrs. Sprague was employed at Stackpole Component Company in
Farmville for 15 years and at Eldercare Nursing Home for 10 years.
She is survived by one son, Melvin Sprague, Jr. of Rice; five
daughters, Erma Sprague and Josephine Hurt (Ernest) both of Rice, Betty
Eldridge (Phillip, Jr.) and Shirley Watson (David, Sr.) both of Farmville
and Martha Walker (Kenneth) of Cullen; one sister, Mary E. Redd of Rice; two
brothers, Thomas Watson of Rice and Freddie White of Philadelphia, PA; three
brothers-in-law, Branch Sprague, James Sprague and Thomas Jones; four
sisters-in-law, Martha Watson, Edith Sprague, Sarah Jones and Priscilla
Johnson; 13 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, November 29 at Monroe
Baptist Church, Rice, with interment in the church cemetery.

DECEMBER 9 - Betty Ruth Ayers Dunn, 62, of Farmville, died Sunday, December
7, 2003 in Farmville.
She was born September 18, 1941 in Prince Edward County, a daughter
of the late Martin Austin and Ruth Louella Handy Ayers.
Mrs. Dunn was the co-owner of Ayers Building Supply.
She is survived by her husband, Harold Bruce Dunn, Jr.; her daughter,
Dana D. Strickland and her husband, Bryon of King George County; her son,
Kevin Bruce Dunn and his wife, Katrina H. of Farmville; her brother, Lynn
Ayers and his wife, Beverly of Farmville and five grandchildren,

Dies Friday
PAMPLIN, Dec. 2 - James "Jim" Aubrey Gilliam, Jr., 86, retired
dairyman, of Pamplin, died Friday, November 28, 2003 in Farmville following
a brief Illness.
He was born May 7, 1917 In Prince Edward County, a son of the late
John Aubrey and Lona Reynolds Gilliam.
Mr. Gilliam served his country starting in 1939 as part of the Army's Honor
Guard at Fort Meyer, VA with subsequent service at Fort Bragg, NC. He
completed his World War II military service in November 1945 and returned to
Prince Edward County to run the family farm with his father.
He was a member of Elon Baptist Church, a former Director of the
Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District and a former part-time Deputy
Sheriff of Prince Edward County.
He is survived by his son, Donald B. Gilliam and his wife, Diane C.
of Pamplin; his daughter, Lona G. Burnett and her husband, J. Douglas of
Satellite Beach, FL; two granddaughters, Allison G. Hunter and her husband,
Terry A. of Pamplin and Shannon Lynn Burnett of Orlando, FL; two
great-grandchildren, Adam Brent and Tiffany Anne Hunter both of Pamplin; his
stepchildren, Donnie Smith, Tim Smith and Nancy Lutz; one brother, Robert
Gilliam of Richmond; three sisters, Lorene G. Harris of Spout Spring, Myrtle
G. Carwile of Madisonville and Marguerite G. Clarkson of Newport News. His
beloved wives, June Johnston Gilliam and Audrey S. Gilliam, brothers, J.
Otway and Clyde W. Gilliam;
his sister, Gladys G. Carwile and two grandchildren, Tracy Lynn and Donald
Benjamin Gilliam, preceded him in death.
A funeral service was held Monday at 11 a.m. at Elon Baptist
Church, Pamplin, with interment in Olive Branch United Methodist Church
Cemetery. The Crewe VFW Post rendered Military Honors at the internment.

Dies Tuesday
DECEMBER 2 - Carolyn Harvey Jones, 92, died Tuesday, November 25,
2003 at the East Pavilion.
A native of Buckingham County, she was a daughter of the late Caleb
C. and Mary Baldwin Harvey. A graduate of Longwood College, Mrs. Jones
taught school in Nansemond County and the City of Suffolk for 30 years. She
loved children and enjoyed helping them grow and learn. She was an active
member of the Holland United Church of Christ and the civic affairs of the
Holland community for most of her adult life, until moving to the Village at
Woods Edge retirement community in Franklin.
Survivors Include her husband of 57 years, Thomas Rawles Jones; one
daughter, Carolyn J. Sherman and her husband, Robert of Bangor, Maine; two
sons, Thomas Rawles Jones, Jr. and his wife, Maryann and Christopher H.
Jones and his wife. Sally all of Alexandria; one sister, Mary Harvey Baldwin
and her husband, Kyle T. of Lynchburg;
five grandchildren, Stacy J. Ries and her husband, Todd, Shannon Marie
Jones, Sian B. Jones, Scott Sherman and Joseph Sherman and one great
grandchild, Ashley Lorie Ries. She was predeceased by a sister, Kathryn
Newman and a brother, Caleb C. Harvey, Jr.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 6, at
the Holland United Church of Christ.

DECEMBER 2 - Mildred Thornhill Mills, 66, of Farmville, died
Friday, November 28, 2003.
She was born August 18, 1937, a daughter of the late Paul Alexander
and Pauline Owen Thornhill. She was retired from the Department of Motor
Vehicles in Farmville.
She is survived by her spouse, William H. "Billy" Mills; her sons,
Michael Mills and his wife, Laurie and Mark Mills and his wife, Becky both
of Farmville;
five grandchildren, Jonathan, Adam, Amy, Tyler and Caleb Mills all of
Farmville; a sister, Faye Morgan and her husband, Charles of Appomattox; her
brother-in-law. Bill Sperry and her sister-in-law, June Thornhill; several
nieces, nephews and many special friends. She was joined in death by her
beloved sister, Lilly Sperry. She was preceded in death by her brothers,
Paul, Jr. and Don Thornhill.
A funeral service was held 3 p.m. Monday at Farmville Baptist
Church with Interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

Dr. Leta Jane Holman, 83
Retired Longwood Professor,
Dies Thursday
DECEMBER 3 - Dr. Leta Jane Holman, 83, of Farmville, died Thursday,
November 27, 2003 after a long illness.
A native of Seymour, Texas, she was born July 30, 1920, the
daughter of D. A. and Eula Lee Holman. After graduating from Seymour High
School, she earned a B.S. degree from Texas Tech University, a M.T. degree
from Baylor University, a M.A. degree from the University of Michigan and a
Ph.D. degree from the University of Maryland, the latter completed in 1961.
She taught biology at Longwood College from 1962-1986, and retired as
Professor Emerita of Biology.
During her professional career, she was an active member of many
distinguished organizations, including Sigma XI, the American Institute of
Biological Sciences, Southwestern Association of Naturalists, the American
Association for the Advancement of Science, the Virginia Academy of Science,
the Association of Southeastern Biologists, and the Acarological Society of
America. She studied the biology and reproductive mechanism of chiggers for
many years, a work culminating in a seminal presentation to the Third
International Congress of Acarology held in Prague, Czechoslovakia.
She also served the college on several departmental and
college-wide committees, including the Library Committee, the promotion and
Tenure Committee, the Landscape Committee, and English Proficiency
Committee.
Dr. Holman was well known as an avid bird watcher, and participated
in numerous field trips designed to document population numbers of various
species. She was a long time member of the Margaret H. Watson Bird Club in
Farmville, and served for many years as its secretary. In addition, she was
an ardent fan of country swing music, and had her own band in high school.
Her group often played on WFAA radio in Dallas, TX.
She is preceded in death by her parents in 1976, and brothers David
in 1919 and Lynn in 1983. She is survived by her beloved sister-in-law,
Vivian, of Wichita Falls, Texas; a niece. Donna Carver of Seymour, Texas;
her nephews, Paul of Beaumont, Texas, Joe of Killeen, Texas and Danny of
Wichita Falls, Texas; nine great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as
numerous friends who formed her extended family in Farmville.
Remembrances may be made to the Oncology Unit of Southside
Community Hospital, to Brookview Lodge, or the Longwood University
Foundation.
Interment will be in Seymour, Texas on Wednesday, December.

Dies Friday
APPOMATTOX, Dec. 2 -Donald S. Webb, 86, of Appomattox, died Friday,
November 28, 2003 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born in Appomattox County , May 1, 1917, he was a son of the late
James Adam and Mamie Beasley Webb. Mr. Webb was the oldest male member of
Hollywood Baptist Church, a farmer, and had retired from the Appomattox
County Landfill as a machine operator.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Slagle Webb; a son, Matthew Adam
Webb and his wife, Anne; two grandchildren, Josef Adam Webb and Cora Sydney
Webb all of Asheville, NC; his step-son, Steve Cawthorn and stepdaughter,
Donna C. Miller and her husband. Jimmy all of Appomattox; two sisters.
Lizzie W. Jamerson and her husband, Alfred of Pamplin and Cassie W. Jennings
and her husband, Garland of Richmond; two aunts, Nannie B. Proffitt and
Ellen Beasley both of Dillwyn and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday at Hollywood Baptist
Church with the Rev. Bob Millis and the Rev. Ed Griffin officiating. Burial
followed in the church cemetery.

DECEMBER 2 - Alma Virginia Terry dark, 92, of Farmville, died
Saturday, November 22, 2003.
She was born July 13, 1911 at Hampden-Sydney, a daughter of the
late Arthur and Agnes Terry. She was the tenth of 11 children and was
preceded in death by all her siblings as well as one son, Ronald.
Mrs. Terry retired from Longwood College's Slater Dining Services
and was a member of Mercy Seat Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, James and Lorenzo; two
daughters-in-law, Barbara and Theresa; three grandchildren, Anthony, Shelly
and Megan;
three nieces, Florence, Thelma and Celestine; three nephews, Arthur, Carlton
and John; five sisters-in-law, Betty, Naomi, Helen, Grace and Marion; one
brother-in-law, Arthur; a dear friend, Ruth Taylor; a devoted care giver,
Sylvia Holman and many other relatives and friends.
