   SCOTTSVILLE, Nov. 25 -Kenneth Ray Taylor, 58, of Scottsville, died Sunday, November 23, 2003.
   He was born January 26, 1945 in Buckingham County, a son of the late Linwood Taylor and Macie Wootton Taylor.He was the widower of Marie Bryant Taylor.
   He is survived by two stepdaughters, Diane E. Chaulklin and Sandra C. Stanley both of Hanover; a stepson, Aubrey Chaulklin, Jr. of Doswell; two sisters, Louise Wootton of Buckingham and Faye Dolan of Rockville; a brother, Wiley Taylor of Richmond and five grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Buckingham Community Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Tuesday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

   BUCKINGHAM CO., Nov. 25 -Glenn Jamerson, 102, Buckingham County native, died Saturday, November 22, 2003.
   He was born June 18, 1901 in Buckingham County, a son of the late Josiah and Dolly Childress Jamerson.
   He is survived by his wife, Rosa P. Jamerson; his children, William D. Jamerson and wife, Beatrice, Pansy Profett and husband. Bob, Vivian Butler and husband. Bill; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, James T. Jamerson of Washougal, WA; two sisters, Alma Denby of Florida and Dainty Jamerson of Dillwyn and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
   Funeral services were held 11 a.m. today (Tuesday) at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

   DILLWYN, Nov. 25 - Garland Nelson Wood, 62, died Thursday, November 20, 2003 at his home in Dillwyn.
   He was the son of the late Anna Hudgins and Milton Wood.
   Mr. Wood served four years in the United States Navy and retired from Design Electric in Charlottesville in September 2003.
   He is survived by his wife, Deborah Johnson Wood; two daughters, Angela Wood of Farmville and Heather W. Bryant of Goochland and a sister, Ailene Snoddy of Arvonla. He was predeceased by a son, Christopher Wood and two brothers, James and Percy Wood.
   Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Sunday at Buckingham Baptist Church, Gold Hill, with interment in Brown Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

   NOVEMBER 25 - Eugene "Jeepie" Livingston Newman, 66, of Kenbridge, formerly of Meherrin, died Wednesday, November 19, 2003.
   He was born July 11, 1937, a son of the late James T. and Alma Jones Newman.
   Mr. Newman was a charter member of the Meherrin Volunteer Fire Department, a member of VFW Post No. 7819 of Crewe, the American Legion of Kenbridge and a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Kenbridge.
   He is survived by a daughter, Ingrid N. Fogg and son-in-law, Neal; three granddaughters, Amber and Jodi Lee and Courtney Marker all of Kenbridge; four sisters. Jewel N. Dix, Betty N. Mull and Lois E Newman all of Meherrin and Mary N. Elder of Cartersville; his wife, Peggy T. Newman of Burkeville and a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by two brothers, James E. Newman and Curtis L. Newman.
   Funeral service were held Sunday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, Kenbridge, with interment in Meherrin Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Thomas Basilio Cantieri
Former Local Lawyer
Dies Sunday


   Portsmouth, Nov. 25 -Thomas Basilio Cantieri, of Portsmouth, died of a heart attack Sunday, November 23, 2003.
   He was born Lynchburg, on December 25, 1932, the son of William B. and Lucy Scott Cantieri.
   He is survived by his wife, Emilee Hines Cantieri; daughter Catherine Cantieri, of Newport News; a sister Lucy C. Alexander, of Ablngdon; nieces Marybeth Alexander, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, Sarah Rice, of Berwyn, PA and Nan C. Wallace, of Springfield, MA and a nephew, William Cantieri of Lancaster, OH; as well as several cousins and great nephews and niece.
   Mr. Cantieri graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill and from the University of Virginia Law School, and received a Masters from George Washington University. He was a founding member of The Virginia Gentlemen Singers and played on the first lacrosse team at the University of North Carolina. He worked at Internal Revenue Service and in private law practice in Kalamazoo, MI, Farmville, and in Norfolk. He retired in 2002 from Jackson-Hewitt Tax Service.
   He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. He sang in the choir of churches wherever he lived, and served on the vestry.
   A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 424 Washington Street in Portsmouth at 2p.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2003.
Memorial Contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, St. John's Episcopal Church or to the Portsmouth Humane Society, 2704 Frederick Blvd., Portsmouth, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Glynn Manning, Jr.

Mary Lusby Spates, 88
Lawyer, Tax Law
Specialist, Dies

 
 MARYLAND, Nov. 20 - Mary Lusby Spates, 88, of Kensington, MD, died Sunday, November 16, 2003.
She was born May 26, 1915 in Washington, DC. She was married to William R. Spates, Sr. for 59 years. He died in April 1994. Her eldest son, William R Spates, Jr., was killed in action in Viet Nam in 1965. The Community Center at Fort Myer is named in his honor, an honor which the family is proud.
   Mrs. Spates was awarded a full scholarship to Holy Cross at Dunbarton Oaks in Washington, DC and graduated in 1932. She graduated in 1935 from Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University along with her husband. She was admitted to the US District Court for the District of Columbia in October 1936 and until her death was a member of the DC Bar. She entered the federal work force in 1956 and retired from the Internal Revenue Service in the early 1980s. As an attorney for the IRS, she specialized in employment tax law and was admitted and qualified as an attorney and counselor for the US Supreme Court.
   Mrs. Spates was very active in the Lions Club of Silver Spring and associated fund raising activities and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellows Award in recognition of her work. She was an honorary and active member of the Society of the Honor Guard of the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington Cemetery.
   She is survived by five children, Margaret Anne Byme of Daly City, CA, James J. Spates of Frederick, MD, Michael F. Spates of Brookeville, MD, Gerald J. Spates of Farmville and Mary Catherine "Cissy" VanSickle of McHenry, MD; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and her sister, Sister Margaret Lusby of CSC of Holy Cross Convent, Kensington, MD. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth H. Lusby and Eileen B. Lusby
   The funeral service will be held Thursday, November 20.

Frances M. Wright, 84

GREEN BAY, Nov. 20 -Frances Musch Wright, 84, died Saturday, November 8, 2003 at the home of Dan and Pam Willson, Green Bay.
   Born June 12, 1919 in Brighton, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Paul, ST., and Faith Musch. She was a 1938 graduate of Camden Central School and attended Central City Business Institute in Syracuse, NY.
   On October 12, 1946 she married Neil C. Wright in Queens, New York and later joined him in the businesses of Wright's Fuel Company, Young's Furniture and Little Chief Maple Syrup. She retired from Camden Central School as a bus driver.
   In 1994 she received the Citizen of the Year Award. For several years she was director of Village Recreation Program and the Curator of the Carriage House Museum. She was active in PTA, Presbyterian Ladies Aid and Youth Fellowship, Queen Village Squares, and the Folksmarch. She was a member of Fanny Farmers, Hillsboro Garden Club, Order of the Eastern Stars, Business and Professional Woman's Club and the Philomathic Club.
   While living here, she enjoyed attending Holly Manor Day Care Center in Farmville.
   She Is survived by her husband, Neil and her five children and their spouses, Franeilia and Robert Jeroloman, Candy and Tim O'Brien, Kitty and Tom Garlock, Paul and Jackie Wright and Pamela and Daniel Willson; six grandchildren, Jacob Wright and wife, Tara, Zea Wright. Jamie and Kurt Jeroloman and Sean and Timothy O'Brien; one great-grandchild, Corbin Jeroloman; one brother, Paul Musch, Jr. and wife, Dorothy and one brother-in-law, Jesse Wright and wife, Muriel.
   A memorial service will be held in Camden, New York on June 12,2004.

   She is survived by three devoted granddaughters, Joan Bland and her family, James and J.J. Bland, Linda Trent and Phyllis Bates; a devoted great-granddaughter, Chanda Mack;three children, Eddie Hobson, Annie Montague and Evelyn Montague; a son-in-law, David Montague; three daughters-in-law, Louise Hobson, Queenie Hobson and Hazel Hobson; 25 grandchildren, four of which she reared as her own, Reba Jarrett, Jerome Hobson, Linda Trent and Joan Bland; 44 great grandchildren; a number of great-great-grandchildren and several great-great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
   Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rocky Mount Baptist Church, Cumberland, with the Rev. Larry E. Smith, Pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

   He was born December 5, 1931 in Buckingham County, a son of the late John R. Moss and Laura Toney Moss.

Mary H. Martin, 91

   NOVEMBER 13 - A memorial service will be held Friday, November 14 at 2 p.m. for Mary Heston Martin, 91, of Farmville, who died November 6, 2003. Miss Martin's graveside service was conducted in North Carolina this week by the Rev. Dr. Joe McCutchen and her nephew, the Rev. Dr. William Thompson. Those same ministers will lead her memorial service.
   Miss Martin moved to Farmville from Winston-Salem, NC in 1999, where she had been a longtime resident, and a former Latin teacher in the public schools of that city. She had traveled on several overseas trips that were sponsored by the Esther Atkinson Museum of Hampden-Sydney. She was an acquaintance of a number of people in this area and was a member of Farmville Presbyterian Church.
   She is survived by a sister, Sara Frances Martin Thompson of Farmville; a nephew, the Rev. Thompson, of Farmville; a niece, Marjorie Martin Pierce of Mount Olive, NC; three great-nephews;
a great-niece; and five great-great-nieces. A brother, W. Heston Martin of Hilton Head, SC, predeceased her.
   Memorial gifts may be made to the College Presbyterian Church Building Fund, Box 13, Hampden-Sydney, or to Hospice of Central Virginia, 202 dark Street, Farmville.

   VIRGINIA BEACH, Nov. 13 -Robert Ernest Metcalfe, II, 69, of Virginia Beach, died October 2, 2003 in Emporia.
Born in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Robert E. (Bob) and Mary Wood Metcalfe. He spent much time with relatives in Buckingham.
   Mr. Metcalfe retired from civil service with NAVSEA at Fort Story and later worked as a courtroom security officer in Virginia Beach. He was a member of Thalia United Methodist Church where he was an usher and member of United Methodist Men. He was a member of the American Legion and formerly active in the Boy Scouts. He was an Army veteran and a graduate of the University of Maryland.
   He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ann Cook Metcalfe; a daughter, Maryann Metcalfe Bateman and her husband, Eric of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; a son, Robert E. Metcalfe, III and his wife, Lydianita of Panama City, FL; a brother, Stanley Metcalfe of Torrence, CA and five grandchildren, Brittany, MacKenzie and Chase Bateman of Texas and Cody and Abby Metcalfe of Florida.
   A funeral service was held Monday, October 6 at Thalia United Methodist Church with interment in Rosewood Memorial Park.
