MANNING, SC, April 13 -Barbara Kay Jeter Simpson, 62, died Friday,
April 9, 2004 at her home.
Born August 8, 1941 in Crewe, she was a daughter of the late Lawson
and Cleo Yeatts Jeter.
She is survived by her husband, Charlie Thomas Simpson;three
daughters; four stepdaughters; a sister, Connie Young of Farmville; two uncles,
Cecil Yeatts of Farmville and M. Ray Yeatts of Crewe; 10 grandchildren; eight
step grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. today (Tuesday) in the Chapel of
Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

WINGINA, April 8 - Hubbard Ray Burnley, 66, of Wingina, died
Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at his home.
He was born February 13, 1938 in Nelson County, a son of the late
James Thomas Burnley and Elsie B. Burnley. He was preceded in death by a son,
Danny Ray Burnley.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Gunter
Burnley; four daughters, Wanda and husband, Kirby Stinson, Jr. of Wingina,
Brenda and husband, John Childress of Gladstone, Rebecca Burnley of Wingina and
Diane and husband, Richard McCormick of Gladstone; one son, Wayne Burnley of
Wingina and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Maple Grove
Pentecostal Church with interment in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7 to 9

died Wednesday, April 7,2004.
Born in Lynchburg, April 24, 1945, he was a son of Ruby Ferguson
Covington of Appomattox and the late Henry Judson Covington.
Mr. Covington was a farmer and member of Elon Baptist Church, Moose
Lodge #975 and the Appomattox Farm Bureau.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by three daughters, Cindy
C. Burnette and husband, Walter of Brookneal, Cristina and Brittany Covington of
Bedford; a granddaughter, Renny Burnette of Brookneal; two stepchildren, Jon
Hammer and wife, Robin of Evergreen and Renna H. Glover and husband, Michael of
Forest; a brother. Henry Earl Covington and wife, Jean of Appomattox and a
sister. Pat C. Dickens and husband, John of Harrisonburg.
Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Friday in the Swan Family
Cemetery, Pamplln by the Rev. Dennis Smith.

MEHERRIN, April 8 - Mary N. Biggers, 77, of Meherrin, died
Wednesday, April 7, 2004.
She was born December 21, 1926, a daughter of the late Charles
'Stock' Newcomb and Minnie Eggleston Newcomb. She was the widow of Marshall E.
Biggers.
Mrs. Biggers was a retired employee of Craddock-Terry Shoe
Corporation.
She is survived by a sister, Mabel N. Nelson of Meherrin and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Browning
Funeral Home, Keysvllle, with interment in Marble Hill Church of God Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Dies March 30
APRIL 6 - Janice A. Martin, 71, of Farmville, died Tuesday, March
30, 2004 at Holly Manor Nursing Home.
She and her husband of 50 years, Don L. Martin, were married April
3, 1953.
A 1950 graduate of Muncy High School, she worked as an usher at the
Ritz Theater in Muncy, Pennsylvania before becoming an operator at the former
West Branch Bell Telephone Co. Later she was a switchboard operator for the
former Sprout-Waldron (now Andritz) In Muncy. She retired from the Southslde
Community Hospital, Farmville, where she worked in outpatient registration.
She was a member of the Roland Ritter Post #268 American Legion
Auxiliary, Muncy. She was baptized at St. Andrew Evangelical Lutheran Church,
Muncy.
Born October 3, 1932, in Hughesville, she was the daughter of Arl
and Viola Kepner Evans.
In addition to her husband, Don, of Farmville, she is survived by
two sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Sharon Martin of Richmond and Jeff and
Sandy Martin of Muncy;one daughter and son-in-law, Crystal and Johnny Whitaker
of Muncy; two sisters, Ida Gordner of Muncy and Sarah Opp of Picture Rocks, PA
and six grandchildren, Thaddeus and Zachary Martin of Muncy, Kayla and Kevin
Martin of Richmond and Amy and Carla Whitaker of Muncy.
A graveside service was held 11 a.m. Saturday in Muncy Cemetery.

PAMPLIN, April 6 - Robert Franklin Silsby, 74, of Pamplln, died
Saturday, April 3, 2004 in Farmvllle.
He was born December 31, 1929 in DeSoto, MO, a son of the late
Harry N. and Ethel Heaton Silsby.
Mr. Silsby served in the Army and was a World War II veteran. He
retired from Midas Muffler and Brakes of St. Petersburg, FL as a general manager
and also was a boat captain in Tampa, FL. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge
#119 AF&AM of DeSoto, MO for 47 years along with a Scottish Rite member of
Tampa, FL.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Whitehead Silsby; his
children, Robert N. Silsby and his wife, Carol of Harrisburg, PA, Susan Daily
and her husband, Steve of Seffner, FL and Janet Rivard and her husband, Joe of
Wesley Chapel, FL; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren and three
nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorthea Blank
Wynn, Helen Mallery and Donna Lee Wood; his brother, Harry Heaton Silsby and his
nephew. Dr. Mike Blank.
A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Friday at Spring Creek
Baptist Church, Darlington Heights. The remains will be buried in DeSoto, MO.

Dies March 18
APRIL 1 - Funeral services for Eugene Douglas Evans, 51, was held 1
p.m. Thursday, March 25 at First Baptist Church, Farmville, with interment in
Old Green Creek Church, Cumberland. Mr. Evans died Thursday, March 18, 2004 at
Southslde Community Hospital.
He was born August 29, 1952, a son of the Reverend John D. Evans of
Farmville and the late Irene Saunders Evans.
Mr. Evans worked for Winn-Dixie for 31 years and began working as
manager for Dlllwyn Supermarket In February, 2004.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife of 33 years,
Christine Young Evans; two daughters, Eugenia Carter and Altovise Evans both of
Cumberland; stepmother, Mary Fowlkes of Farmville; step-mother-in-law, Esterlyn
Young of Farmville; one sister, Irene Helen Siplin of Brooklyn, NY; four
brothers, Abraham L. Evans, John E. Evans and Alvin L. Evans all of Farmville
and Fred D. Evans of Prospect; one son-in-law, Kim Carter of Cumberland; two
grandchildren, Tiera L. Carter and RaShawn Carter of Cumberland and a host of
nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and two devoted buddies. Earl Hamilton
and James Scott. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jessie Evans.

ASHEBORO, NC, April 1 -Kathryn Newman Bageant Trudell, 84, of
Asheboro, NC, died Monday, March 29, 2004.
Mrs. Trudell was a native of Blackstone and was a member of First
United Methodist Church. She was an avid member of Asheboro Women's Club and the
Dogwood Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her first husband, A.
Granville Bageant.
She is survived by her husband, Richard J. Trudell; son and
daughter-in-law, George and Betsy Bageant of Asheboro; daughter and son-in-law,
Sherry and Jim Runnels of Dunlap, IA; daughter and son-in-law, Deb-ble and Mike
Rasberry of Suffolk; sisters, Lou Stanley of Farmville, Barbara O'Shields of
Lexington, Alice Murphy of Nellysford; granddaughters. Holly McArthur, Katy
Millwood, Heather Nohr, Joy Goodchild, Audrey Lave; grandsons, David and John
Rasberry and ten great-grandchildren.

Dr. John Marshall
Moseley III
John Marshall Moseley III, MD passed way unexpectedly on Saturday,
March 20, while working aboard his sailboat in Deltaville. He was fifty-nine. He
is survived by his daughters, Tahia and Briana, his brother Billy, and his
mother, Edith.
Jack was born on August 23, 1944, the son of Edith Hancock Moseley,
of Richmond, and J. Marshall Moseley, of Dillwyn. He grew up in Richmond
where he attended St. Christopher's School. He attended The University of
Virginia and The Medical College of Virginia. He did his internship at the
Portsmouth Naval Hospital, and served as a flight surgeon in the US Navy aboard
the USS Oriskany in the Gulf of Tonkin. He married Sylvia Townsend, of San
Diego, in the summer of 1971. He practiced emergency room medicine in California
before embarking on a sail through the South Pacific. His eldest daughter,
Tahia, was born on the boat in New Zealand. They were living in Virginia when
their second daughter, Briana, was born. At that time Jack was working as head
of the emergency room at The Rappahannock General Hospital.
Jack did residencies in both Family Practice
and Emergency Room Medicine and, after moving back to California, worked at the
Laguna Niguel Family Medical Center. He returned to Virginia in 2000 by sailing
with family and friends through the Panama Canal on his boat Tusitala.
He was a member of the American Medical Association, The Fishing
Bay Yacht Club and the Tom Mix Rangers. He is predeceased by his father, J.
Marshall Moseley, and his brother, James Hancock Moseley. Graveside funeral
services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the family cemetery at Marshall
Place.
The family will receive friends at the house
from 11 a.m. until the hour of service. Donations can be made to The Saint
Christopher's School foundation towards the sailing program.

March 27, 2004 in Henrico Doctors Hospital.
She was born May 16, 1924 in Richmond, a daughter of the late
Beecher and Nellie LeSueur Thomas.
She is survived by a brother, Keith Thomas and his wife, Gladys of
Richmond; two sisters, Jean Chenault and her husband, Ralph of Buckingham and
Doris Allen Benart and her husband. Bob of Dillwyn. She was preceded in death by
sisters, Mildred Duncan and Mary Hart and brothers, Henry, Ben, Myrt, B. G. and
Clarence Thomas.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday In Rocky Mount
Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service.

Thursday, March 25, 2004 at his home.
He was born January 11, 1922 to the late Leslie Archer Bersch and
Jane Williams Bersch in Dillwyn.
Mr. Bersch was a devoted member, as well as secretary and treasurer
for many years at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Buckingham County Lions Club and
Buckingham County Electoral Board.
He is survived by his wife, Erecelle Taylor Bersch; two sons, David
and his wife, Debbie and Richard and his wife, Barbara all of Dillwyn; one
daughter, Janice Bersch of Madison; one brother, Victor Lightfoot Bersch and his
wife, Billee; one sister, Louise "Lou" Dunkum; six grandchildren, Jennifer and
husband. Leaf Martin, Brian and Emily Bersch and Michael Bersch all of Dillwyn,
Jean Marie Dixon, Will and wife, Helen Dixon of Madison; four

DILLWYN, March 30 - Mary Frances O'Bryant Ragland, 73, of Dlllwyn,
died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at a local nursing home.
Born December 21, 1930, she was the daughter of the late James
Granderson Newton and Rosa O'Bryant Newton.
She was a retired bank teller, working 41 years for Bank of
America.
She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Shumaker; a brother, Russell
"Boo" O'Bryant and numerous nieces and nephews, two special ones, Shelby Taylor
and Paul Garrett.

Dies March 24
ARVONIA, March 30 - George A. LaLonde, 56, of Arvonia, formerly of
Clayton, NY, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 after a courageous battle with many
illnesses.
A Mass will be held at the Church of the Nativity, Rt. 60
Buckingham, on Saturday, April 3, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends
following the service at the church.
Mr. LaLonde retired 24 years
N.A.D.E.P. and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member of Moose Lodge #2104
and the Knights of Columbus. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend and
will be missed.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lora; daughters, Michelle and
husband, Tim and Kimberly and husband. Bob; sons, Jeremy and Michael; grandsons,
Rayon, Jacob and Logan; his mother, Helen LaLonde; brother, Frank and sisters,
Marleene, Marsha, Melba and Karen.

MARCH 30 - Dorothy Baker Williams, 78, of Salt Springs, Florida,
died December 24, 2003 as the result of an automobile accident.
Mrs. Williams was very active in writing, painting, bridge and
other social activities. She published her autobiography. Roots & Wings, in
1996. She wrote numerous poems, founded a writer's forum in Salt Springs and
wrote a weekly column for The Ocala Star Banner and was In the process of
writing her second book. Her latest adventure was the initiation of a Red Hat
Society Chapter in Salt Springs.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Cortez Williams;
two daughters, Joyce Gardner Sanderson of Florence, SC and Hope Gardner Dutton
of Cypress, TX; three sons, Glenwood Baker Gardner of Quinton, John Carter
Gardner of Hampton and Woody Mepham of Bradenton, FL; three stepdaughters, Dena
Williams of Clearwater, FL, Peggy Walkingstick of Houston, TX and Donna Niemuth
of Berlin, WI; two stepsons, Dave Williams of Maryland and Dale Williams of
Clearwater, FL; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her eldest son, Robert Gardner and a stepson, Danny Williams.
