The Farmville Lions and Longwood University’s Speech, Hearing and Learning Services (SHLS) teamed up to present a hearing conservation presentation to fourth-graders at Cumberland County Elementary School (CCES) on Nov. 4 — the first time the presentation has been given to CCES students. More than 100 students received the training, with Lions and SHLS participants calling the presentation “an immense success.”

The presentation teaches fourth-graders about parts of the ear, facts about sound, how sound travels, what sounds are too loud, what sounds are safe and how to protect their hearing.

“All the fourth-grade students were well mannered, attentive and responsive during the presentation and it was very evident they had been properly taught by dedicated and caring professional teachers,” members of the Farmville Lions Club Hearing Committee said. “(We) would like to thank the professional and collegial support received from Dr. Lissa Power-deFur, professor, Communications Sciences and Disorders and director of SHLS; Dr. Mani Aguilar, SHLS clinical audiologist; and the Longwood undergraduate Communication Sciences and Disorders majors, Danielle Brooks, Becky Schneider and Katelyn Swale.”
